Geevor Tin Mine visit 20th September 2024
The Cornwall Group continues to show a great interest in the Duchy’s mining heritage. In 2004 we went underground at South Crofty, while for Drive it Day in 2013 our destination was the Levant Mine which is situated on the Land’s End peninsula. Drive it Day 2014 took us on a roundabout route to The China Clay Museum at Wheal Martyn near St. Austell. For our Autumn Run this year we visited Geevor Mine which is not far from Levant. A sunny Autumn day ensured that we had a good turnout of TRs when we met for something to eat and drink at Birdie’s Bistro on Hayle Causeway. While in the part of the county we always enjoy a drive along the B3306 North Coast road West of St. Ives. On arrival at Geevor we were greeted by our guide, Mark, who took us on a humorous and informative tour of the mine which was operating until 1990. We had the added benefit of details of the working practises provided by one of our group members, Paul, who was employed at the mine at the time of its closure. A good time was had by One and All.
